Never really prepared

While I was away on a business trip, my sweet cat friend of 19 years died.  She saw me through graduate school and 15, yes 15 moves.  My dear friend who was taking care of her, dug her grave so that I wouldn't have to come home to that.  That's a true friend!

She was old and lived a good, long life, but you're never really prepared.  My house is quieter and my other cat is doing her best to comfort me.  She is staying close and purring...not her standard behavior.  She's always been affectionate, but not affectionate like the one who died. It always amazes me at how much animals can pick up on your emotions.

Pets are family members and their loss leaves such a hole.  You give your heart freely, knowing that it's going to be broken, but they love you so much...that it is totally, completely WORTH IT!

You never really forget about a pet. I find myself thinking about the dogs I grew up with all the time.

    1. Thank you, Callie, and you are so right. I still think about all the pets I had as a child too! Thanks for the hugs.

  2. So sorry for your loss. I lost two of my little "kiddies" within a year and it's so hard getting used to life w/o them.

    1. It is hard. I talk to my cats a lot, but I talked to each of them differently and I find I am having to get over not calling for the one who died. It is a difficult transition. I am so sorry about your cats too!

    1. Thank you for your sympathies. Yes, my remaining cat is really stepping up to comfort me. She is sticking close...which is so not a characteristic of her. I am beginning to wonder if maybe the other one kept her at bay and now that she is gone, the other one is behaving like she always wanted. We'll see how long it lasts...lololol.

  4. Cygnet,
I'm a cat person too so I understand your loss. I'm so sorry. Nineteen years is a wonderfully long life, but it's never quite enough.

    Hugs,

    1. Thanks, PK. Nineteen years is longer than most cats live, but you are right, it isn't long enough. At least I didn't have to do the horrible drive to the vet...she was looking out for me right to the end!

    1. Thanks...it is such a hard part of being a pet owner, but you love them, so you do it. I'm just glad that my cat died without me having to drive her to the vet.

  6. So very sorry for your loss Cygnet...as an animal lover with several cats as part of my family, I can very much understand your pain. Have lost quite a few pets over the years.

Sending lots of comfort and healing energy your way.

    Blessings,
    Cat

  7. Oh Sweetheart,
I am so sorry for the loss of your dear kitty. I am madly in love with my dear old Greg....and although we know they don't live forever, it is sometimes little comfort because we need them so much.
I am so touched by the story of your other kitty reaching out to be there for you - they are such wonderfully complicated animals.
    Take care,
    Love and Hugs
